Troubleshooting Matter Builds

Android Debug Bridge setup

Android Debug Bridge (adb) should be set up prior to troubleshooting. To set it up:

  1. Install "adb" on your computer.
  2. Turn on Developer Options and USB Debugging on your Android phone.

Border router device logs

You can view device logs of your border router by doing the following:

  1. Set up Android Debug Bridge.
  2. Get the IP address of your border router:
    1. Swipe down from the top of the screen
    2. Tap the Settings icon
    3. Find the device IP address: On a Google Nest Hub (2nd Generation), go to Device information > Technical information > IP Address
  3. On a computer on the same Wi-Fi network as the device:
      adb connect ip-address
      adb logcat

  4. To provide logs to someone, perform the operation that is failing and pipe the output to a text file:
      adb logcat -d > platform-logs.txt

Verify your GPS Matter modules

To check if you have the Google Play services Matter modules, do the following:

  1. Set up Android Debug Bridge.
  2. Use a USB cable to connect your Android phone to your computer.
  3. Run this command in a terminal to verify that the necessary Matter modules are installed:
adb shell dumpsys activity provider com.google.android.gms.chimera.container.GmsModuleProvider | grep "com.google.android.gms.connectedhome"

If you see output similar to the below, you have the Matter modules installed:
    com.google.android.gms.connectedhome [v222110900]
Note that the version number above may be different from your device.
  4. Run this command in a terminal to verify that the necessary Thread modules are installed:
adb shell dumpsys activity provider com.google.android.gms.chimera.container.GmsModuleProvider | grep "com.google.android.gms.threadnetwork"

If you see output similar to the below, you have the Thread modules installed:
    com.google.android.gms.threadnetwork [v222106301]
Note that the version number above may be different from your device.

If the modules are not listed, it means that either:

  1. You haven't completed all steps in Google Play Services. Check that section again and make sure all steps have been completed.
  2. You have an outdated Android version. Make sure it's Android O (8.1) or above.
  3. There was an issue assigning your user to the correct Google Groups. See Account and Device Access and verify the details needed for EAP access with your support contact.
  4. The Matter modules have not been downloaded yet. Wait at least 24 hours for them to download. Ensure your device is powered on and charging during this time, so the download isn't delayed. If you haven't received the modules within 24 hours, you can try a factory data reset of the device to force the modules to download.
